Godzilla vs. Kong, also known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster movie made by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth film in the MonsterVerse, following Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

The film is now under production for a sequel.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two of the world's most feared monsters against one other in a fight that might decide the destiny of the whole planet. Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has created a unique and intense relationship, joins Kong and his guards on a treacherous adventure to locate his rightful home. However, they find themselves in the path of a Godzilla infuriated and wreaking havoc on the planet. Unknown factors sparked the titanic showdown, but it's merely the beginning of the Earth's deepest mysteries.

When Jia comes to see Kong and offers him a toy, the Titan, realizing that he is stuck within the biodome, tosses a tree at it.

Impressed with Godzilla's ability to save mankind, the populace turned against him following the assault. An adult listener of Bernie's show, Madison Russell, is frightened about the latest Godzilla assault on her school. When she attempts to reason with her widower father Mark (who is also the Monarch's director) about the source of Godzilla's rampage, he ignores all she says, saying merely that animals may change like humans. Soon after, Madison enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to uncover the mysteries of Apex and the man behind Godzilla's rampage

Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists the help of former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind as they search for a powerful energy source for their company. When Nathan's brother tried to investigate the Hollow Earth, he was murdered by a tremendous anti-gravity field contained inside the tunnel. Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which are modified ships that can endure the pressure of the gravitational field, according to Walter.

Boarding a customized boat with a light-sedated Kong locked up to keep him from escaping. That night, Kong gets restless and anxious, but Jia soothes him by enabling her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home", surprising Ilene. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan how she adopted Jia when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the sole survivor since Kong protected her, leading to their relationship.

Their struggle is broken up, however, when Godzilla is distracted by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

Because there is no other option, Nathan decides that the group should turn off all of the ships' engines to fool Godzilla into thinking he has destroyed them and Kong has been defeated, which they eventually do. Godzilla looks at the shattered fleet with interest and then swims away, assuming he has triumphed. Realizing that reactivating the ships may allow Godzilla to return, the party decides to fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance site in Antarctica, where Ghidorah was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his house is via the front door, but he is hesitant to walk through it.

There, Godzilla enters the center of the city and, recognizing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the biosphere, collapsing the temple. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team attempt to flee in their HEAV, but Kong grabs it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape, instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to ensure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her personnel.

Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and sets off with his axe towards Hong Kong, while Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. When Kong fights Godzilla in Hong Kong again, he gains the upper hand and shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat, preventing him from unleashing his atomic breath. Kong attacks Godzilla with his axe, but Godzilla removes and discards the axe. Kong reclaims his axe and attacks Godzilla, generating an explosion that knocks both Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the fight with Godzilla.

Godzilla recovers and rises up as he hunts for Kong atop a skyscraper. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above and puts him in a chokehold with the intention of strangling him. Despite Kong's attempts to get Godzilla off of him by striking his damaged leg, Godzilla breaks free and unleashes his entire rage on him, dislocating his left arm, slicing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice. Godzilla roars angrily at Kong, his vanquished foe who is bound and pinned.

Godzilla is so taken aback by Kong's power and expertise that he spares his life before walking away, leaving him alive but seriously injured in the process.

Despite the titanic efforts of the two Titans, the robot ultimately triumphs. Mechagodzilla attempts to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong's axe has lost its charge and he manages to escape. There is nothing Bernie and the others can do for Kong or Godzilla, so he proposes that they drink. Bernie's flask is stolen by Josh, who has an epiphany, and he spills the contents of the flask over Mechagodzilla's control panel, forcing the creature to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong to regain control of the battle.

In the aftermath, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia sit together amid the rubble, while Madison reunites Mark with Josh and Bernie, who is overjoyed to see Mark and invites him onto his podcast to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Suddenly, Godzilla approaches Kong, causing the Titan to retrieve his axe and ready to restart the battle. Godzilla, on the other hand, refrains from attacking and instead just stares Kong down. Kong lowers his axe in recognition of their actual adversary's demise, thereby ending the conflict between his species and Godzilla's. Godzilla and Kong view each other as equals after they are no longer competitors, before Godzilla quietly goes to the water, accompanied by Kong and the assembled people.

Godzilla vs. Kong has gotten largely positive feedback. As of April 16, 2021, Rotten Tomatoes has 341 reviews, 254 of which are fresh, with a "Tomatometer" score of 74 percent fresh. "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects," the site's audience review description said. "Forget character development and human drama; Godzilla vs. Kong delivers all the excitement you'd expect from two huge monsters battling it out." While many people enjoyed the film's monster brawling, others were let down by the "half-baked" human element. The film credited for reversing the COVID-19 pandemic-fueled box office drop with an estimated $48.5 million in US box office receipts by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia claimed in a statement that the film had the largest viewership of any series or movie aired on HBO Max since its debut, but it didn't disclose precise figures. The film also fared well outside of the United States, earning over $236 million in non-US territories.

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall movie office receipts of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the pandemic's continuing effect on the box office.

Following his unproduced script for the unmade 1994 feature, Terry Rossio's first Godzilla film is here.

Godzilla vs. Kong has the shortest running duration in the MonsterVerse, clocking in at 113 minutes.

The film includes many references to NGE:

Kong's hops from ship to ship are comparable to Eva Unit-02's jumps from ship to ship to evade an angel, which is similar to Godzilla's jumps from ship to ship.

The location where Mechagodzilla is stationed is similar to the Central Dogma in that it is subterranean and has a pyramid on top.
